 ABOUT THE TITLE
Fellmann s Human Geography introduces students to the scope and excitement of human geography and its relevance to their daily lives. This edition continues to convey the breadth of human geography and to provide insight into the nature and intellectual challenges of the field of geography itself. The authors pay special attention to gender issues and assume no previous experience in geography on the part of the students.
Features
• This tenth edition retains the basic format of its predecessors but contains significant content changes including new and revised tables maps and text. The world of human geography is constantly changing in response to developing cultural economic and political patterns.
• Students will be using a text that reflects current human geography events and patterns. They will be able to readily identify with many details and stories and better understand how human geography relates to their daily lives.
• Updated artwork illustrations and photos throughout. As in previous editions artwork has been generated to accommodate colorblind readers.
• Artwork and illustrations reflect current research and data. Students will appreciate the effective use of color within maps and illustrations for better understanding.
• Many new expanded and updated topics have been added throughout including: revised material on immigration flows and ethnic groups expanded discussion of the intensive commercial orientation of American agriculture expanded treatment of WTO negotiations including the Doha round information on transnational corporations and the impact of high-tech industries on national economies and world trade.
• Expanded coverage and updated information providing students with current information.
• Chapter 10 includes an extensive update and the latest available data on the many social and economic indicators. In addition there is a new section reviewing the United Nations Millennium Development Goals that are central to the identification of national development objectives and assessment of achievements.
• Expanded and updated coverage.
• Chapter 11 has been rewritten and restructured to make its content easier to understand and more accessible to students.
• Students will better understand this rewritten information.
• Revised Getting Started section including new What Is Geography? subsection.
• Students will appreciate information on beginning this course as well as what geography encompasses.
• Chapter Opening Vignettes. As in earlier editions chapter introductions take the form of interest-arousing vignettes to focus student attention on the subject matter that follows.
• People like to hear stories. They literally make things more real to us. Vignettes perform this important service.
• Focus Preview. As in earlier editions this introductory chapter page alerts students to the main themes of the chapter.
• Most human geography themes are new to students and the Focus Preview sections will help them understand the chapter content more fully.
• Boxed Inserts. As in previous editions these boxes found in every chapter expand on ideas included within the text or introduce related examples of chapter concepts or conclusions often in gender-related contexts.
• Professors can easily include or omit boxed inserts and identify them on the syllabus. Students automatically recognize this feature as an example related to the main chapter content.
• Geography and Public Policy Boxes. As in previous editions these special-purpose boxes found in almost every chapter introduce discussions of a topic of current national or international interest and conclude with a set of questions designed to induce thought and class discussion.
