 ABOUT THE TITLE
This book provides a fascinating overview of all aspects of secondary school life - through the eyes of its students. It examines how their experiences can help us as teachers to take stock of our teaching styles and methodologies, and allows us to take a fresh look at the way our schools are run on a daily basis. It gives teachers an opportunity to evaluate and refresh not only how they teach, so that effective learning can take place, but also reviews the impact school management and administrative procedures have on the lives of our students. Brimming with honest and down-to-earth advice, this highly practical guide is written for all classroom teachers, as well as middle and senior managers.

Brian Carline, Brian Carline has been teaching for over thirty years and most recently worked as an Assistant Head at a secondary school in Essex. In his spare time, he's a stand-up comedian.

 TABLE OF CONTENTS
Introduction
Chapter 1. Pupils as Individuals
Looks as pupils as individual people with varied backgrounds, home lives, pressures, expectations, and warns against stereotyping.
Chapter 2. Teaching and Learning 1
Children prefer teachers who are strict but not over-severe or too permissive; fair and consistent in their use of rewards and punishments; able to treat pupils as individuals; able to make lessons interesting and to provide a variety of stimulating work; able to explain things clearly; approachable, good humoured but not sarcastic. This chapter describes what pupils think about discipline and their treatment as individuals.
Chapter 3. Teaching and Learning 2
Following on from Teaching and Learning 1, pupils in this chapter outline the importance of having interesting lessons that are delivered with clarity and humour.
Chapter 4. Form Tutors

Chapter 5. Middle Leaders
Pupils’ interpretation of middle management in the school. Do they really understand the jobs they do? If not, why not? A look at student expectations of such key roles. How such a responsible position should engender respect and credibility from the student body. Do students perceive them as having power and the ability to make things happen? The disciplinary aspect of the Head of Year and how they balance this dimension as Directors of Learning. The pastoral/academic divide and how these middle managers should foster a more holistic approach to student achievement.
Chapter 6. Other Personnel who Impact on the Pupil Experience 1
Looks at pupils' perceptions of other school staff with whom they come into contact: the Special Educational Needs Coordinator, the PSHE Coordinator, and the Post 16/Work Experience Coordinator.
